This type of publication was the first geological survey publication series and began under Charles Deiss, state geologist and Indiana University Geology Department chair. Reports of progress were small to medium manuscripts, which additional reports were expected to follow, updating the progress of a study over time. Deiss began this series shortly after his arrival in 1945, to revitalize the geological survey by disseminating geological information and research to the public. These documents were published in a 6-inch by 9-inch format, as was popular at this time.
